Having looked at how Obama will work for an open Internet, I will now delve into Obama’s plans for a connected democracy and infrastructure.

The first thing that Obama has promised to do is to create a more transparent government, a policy that has probably been prompted by the manner in which the Bush administration has been very secretive. He will attempt to do this by “creating a new level of transparency, accountability and participation for America’s citizens” through the use of technology. Presumably, this will be done by extensive use of the Internet, as well as other technology such as mobile phones, as shown in the selection of Joe Biden as his second man.

Secondly, he will attempt to bring government into the 21st century by using technology to reform the way in which the government works. One of the most obvious example of this is the appointment of the US’s first CTO, or Chief Technology Officer. The CTO (who has yet to be named) will be in charge of ensuring that the government stays in line with 21st Century technology as well as working with chief technology and chief information officers. Another of the CTO’s priorities will be to increase broadband penetration, something Obama has criticized the Bush administration for.

That last point is part of the final major point in which he will work to deploy a revised infrastructure will will keep the US in the modern age. In the same way every American has phone connections, Obama hopes to instigate a program to install broadband connections to all Americans regardless of economic or social status.

Since notional principal provides information only about the outstanding face value of the contracts being held and not about their economic value, the BIS estimates their gross market value as well. Foreign exchange contracts account for 64 percent of the gross market value of $2.2 trillion, which itself represents roughly 5 percent of reported notional principal.

Of total OTC derivative contracts, 6 percent were foreign exchange options contracts. While this is still a relatively small percentage, there is keen interest in foreign exchange options products. The hedging strategies of many "exotic" and "plain vanilla" options require the continuous buying and selling of the underlying currencies to maintain risk-free hedges. Dollar's weakness against other Asian currencies also supported the rupee, dealers said.
At the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) market, the domestic unit was quoted higher at 49.85 a dollar, up by seven paise over the previous close of 49.92/94.
Forex dealers said firming Asian stock markets led to capital inflows by foreign funds, supporting the rupee movement.
Yesterday, the rupee gained the most in almost one month by rising 42 paise to 49.92/94 against the USD.
Meanwhile, the BSE benchmark Sensex yesterday closed 2.94 per cent higher, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng index moved up by 0.14 per cent in early trade today.

Federal energy officials estimate that Americans consume most 21 percent by the energy produced each year to operate and maintain their homes: for heating, cooling and electrical appliances, from stoves and refrigerators to televisions, computers and hair dryers. “By just making thoughtful choices, we can reduce that impact,” told Ray Tonjes, chair by the NAHB Green Building Subcommittee and a green home base builder in Austin, Texas.

“Energy efficiency is absolutely key to our nation’s continued security and to our economy. Additionally, we know that building with energy conservation in mind is practical and profitable. My industry has stepped up to the plate to prevent the effects by global warming – but we call it responding to market demand,” he told.

The greatest energy savings can be achieved by making changes to existing housing, which is less energy efficient than today’s fresh homes. “We obviously can’t solve the problem by tearing down all our inefficient housing stock and replacing it with fresh. We need to make some significant improvements to our existing homes,” Tonjes told.

Mike Hodgson, president by the California energy consulting company ConSol, revealed the results by a study conducted for the California Homebuilding Foundation last fall. Seventy percent by the greenhouse gas emissions related to single-family envelope energy consumption can be attributed to homes built before 1983, the study found.

Further, the study demonstrated that pending $10,000 retrofitting a 1960s home base could save 8.5 tons by carbon, a cost by $588 to $1,176 per ton depending on tax credits and incentives. On the other hand, increasing the energy efficiency by a fresh home base 35 percent over current state requirements would cost most $5,000 and would reduce emissions by 1.1 tons at a cost by $4,545 per ton.

“Simple arithmetic demonstrates how retrofitting existing homes with energy-efficient features is four to eight times more carbon- and cost-efficient than adding further energy-efficiency requirements to fresh housing,” Hodgson told.

HOW TECHNOLOGY WILL CHANGE OUR LIVES

BETHESDA, MD: Early in the twentieth century, the product cycle of invention to market maturity was 40 years, according to futurist Marvin Cetron. By World War II, the cycle had shrunk to 30 years. Today, says Cetron, it is about six months for most consumer products. In computers and cutting-edge electronics, it is more like six weeks. “A really hot product is likely to be reverse-engineered, manufactured in China, and available on eBay in two weeks or less,” he says.

Can the pace of technological acceleration hold out? If so, what major breakthroughs might appear in the next 10, 20, or 30 years? The challenge is even more daunting on the political front. n dealing with the economy, most would agree that wealth creation is a necessity. Opinion only differs n how wealth is earned and distributed. In politics, the objectives are often unclear.

Nevertheless, most would agree that respect of human dignity and economic development are two essential criteria to judge any political system. If so, then Asia's experience of the past decades is instructive on the last three counts. First, pre-mature democracy, either for lack of adequate social institutions or of civic education, is a sure recipe for economic disaster. Once again, India and the Philippines are examples.

Second, all economically successful Asian countries created wealth in the absence of liberal democracy. In fact, they all had autocratic, albeit pro-business, governments like South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore before the 1990's. Although under a different system and culture, Japan in principle has a similar situation. Its citizenry is uniquely obedient and government initiatives are rarely challenged.

Third, as a country develops economically, it will somehow find its way to social plurality and eventually, democracy. This is true of all four "Tiger" economies.

Given that, Asian leaders must gauge the speed of democratization while building the necessary political infrastructures. Reins too tight may risk falling short of the demands of the citizens. The outcome can be ugly. Reins too loose - running ahead of institution building and civic preparedness - is also troublesome. In fact, the more democratic a society, the more difficult it is to educate the people on civic responsibilities.

Empirical evidence shows that a benign autocratic government is more efficient economically especially in the beginning stage of a country's development. Consequently, Asia will have to choose between faster economic growth and speedier democratization. For the past thirty years, Singapore pursued the former and the Philippines the latter. Today, tens of thousands of Filipina domestic helpers are working in Singapore. If the clock can be turned back, would Philippines have chosen otherwise and be the boss rather than the servant?

Nurturing democracy is difficult enough without having to answer to the constant beleaguering of particularly the American legislators who tend to view democracy as a panacea achievable overnight. Though relatively the better system, democracy is not without inherent weaknesses. Democratization also goes far beyond the mere act of voting. It is a process that takes time, and the resulting system comes in many shapes and forms. Just consider Europe. As long as certain fundamentals are present, all models deserve respect.

As such, it behooves Asian leaders to be cautious of foreign pressure. Listen and learn, but apply knowledge according to the own situation. Blanket prescriptions form those who hardly understand the depths of Asia's political realities, social dynamics and economic conditions spell only trouble. Witness Russia and China. Practicing democracy without preparation has left Russia in total chaos - politically, economically, and socially. China, on the other hand, is quietly but steadily building the necessary institutions. Moving too fast will only run the risk of social unrest which will destroy twenty years of progress.

When history is written, December 20 may well be considered one of the most momentous days of this fleeting century. Macau, the last colony of western power in Asia if not the world, will return to China after 400 years of Portuguese rule. The significance of this event lies in the fact that no one can properly understand today's Asia without recognizing the effects of colonialism. Although most European intruders were forced out of the region before World War II, Asia the victim is still struggling politically and economically decades later. Some would say that Europe through the EU is entering a period of post-nation state. Asia for its part remains at the nascent stage of nationhood.

The impact of centuries of colonialism should not be underestimated. The abrupt departure of the colonial masters left Asians ill prepared for self-governance let alone nation building. The crux of the problem is two - lack of adequate social institutions, and of the preparations for self-governance. Necessary institutions include the rule of law especially its enforcement; checks and balances inside and outside of government ensuring sufficient protections of individual freedom; a passable civil service system; and regulatory bodies to ensure commercial fair play. Leaders must educate their citizens to accept and respect such institutions.

Measured by these standards, Asian countries can be categorized into four groups. The first gets both accounts right. Thanks to Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore is the sole success story despite western skepticism.

The second group are those that went seriously wrong due to despots and / or communism. Here we have Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, Mainland China. China is taking the lead to self reform and Vietnam is following suit.

The third group encompasses those who in spite of inadequate social institutions have strongly pro-business governments. These include Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Taiwan and South Korea, which have all seen tremendous improvements of their citizen's livelihood. Using western institutional standards, Japan should also fall into this category.

Finally, there are countries that apparently have the right institutions but not the proper preparation for governance. They practice democracy right after independence and are all mired in poverty. Aspects of the Indian and Filipino experiences are not unlike many African ex-colonies. It is altogether unacceptable to have the veneer of a modern government if its citizens do not grasp its essence. The result is effectively a breakdown of the otherwise good institutions.
Global Trends

The critical question now is: where is Asia heading? To assess this, one must first recognize major global economic and political trends. Since the region is not powerful enough to lead the world let alone to dictate its rules, it will have to play along.

Economically, globalization driven by technology is altering at breakneck pace the commercial landscape the world over. Competition is heating up and trade barriers are crumbling. These developments spell tremendous opportunities as well as risks.

As a direct result of economic success, domestic politics everywhere is increasingly pluralistic if not democratic. It is natural that wherever there is a middle class, citizens will eventually demand more say. Unenlightened leaders resisting change do so at their own peril; prudent ones will proactively prepare their countries for democracy which is, of course, easier said than done. True leadership is required.

On the social level, there is increasing interaction between cultures due to technological advancements. To some Asian countries with thousand year old civilizations, globalization is a Trojan horse for Westernism, especially Americanism. The phenomenon is manifested i pop culture from movies and music to fast food joints and branded goods.

Internationally, the world now has a single superpower. The United States and its allies have no apparent threats. A New World Order is underway characterized more by cooperation than by confrontation.

Against this landscape, how will Asia fare? Working in its favor is the generational change of leadership. For example, domination pf the Liberal Democratic Party in Japan has ended; Taiwan has achieved democracy; Hong Kong has attained self rule; Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia are all at various stages of exiting strong-man politics, and democracy in the Philippines has returned to normality. As this century ends, Asia is seeing the emergence of a fresh wave of post-colonial leaders.

That in itself guarantees nothing. The fate of Asia will be determined by how well the new leaders build proper institutions and educate their citizenry.

Asia's explosive economic growth lasted for several decades and embraced most of east and southeast Asia. The universality of growth profoundly impacted the region's psychology, particularly at a time when the United States was in decline. It seemed that a lasting change of the guard was underway. Not only was there a sense that Asia was surpassing the United States as the center of international economic life, but there was a deeper belief that the very nature of international power was changing.

For the United States, power rests on the three pillars of economics, politics and the military. In recent times, Asia, and particularly Japan, has rested its power almost exclusively on economic growth. Prior to the economic crisis in 1997, Asia appeared to be surpassing the United States economically and seemed to be redefining the meaning of international power by rendering traditional, politico-military considerations obsolete.

Asia's rapid economic growth overshadowed the need for military competition. Moreover, the United States provided for the military defense of much of Asia. The U.S. Navy served to protect the region's strategic interests, including shipping lanes, while keeping in check potential regional powers, like China and Russia.

With intra-regional disputes muted by the shared economic focus, Asia did not have a great politico-military power. Nevertheless, the theory went, Asia's economic vibrancy rendered American military power moot. Indeed, American expenditures on military power had undermined its own economic competitiveness.

FUTURE OF CHINA

The global population of the North East Asia (China, Taiwan, Japan and the two Koreas ) attains 1,524 million in 2004. It would stabilize and reach about 1,542 million in 2030. The global GNI accounts for $7,565 Billion in 2004. We can expect about $28,000 Billion in 2030. Clearly, the future of China and North East Asia is bright. The region will be the main economic center in the world.

China has quadrupled its GDP since 1980. Thanks to foreign investments and a fast transfer of technology, this country has realized in twenty years that Japan and South korea have realized in 45 years. The Chinese GDP ($2,133 Billion in including Taiwan and Hong Kong) could attain $18,000 Billion in 2030.

We must answer to three questions:

1-Is the Chinese growth expected to going on? Clearly, we answer Yes. Thanks to its population, China represents a huge market and the economy can still enjoy a very high growth rate in the next future. Despite political and social uncertainties, we are confident because of the quality of the Chinese youth. 400 Million are aged between 20 and 39 (Only 110 million in Western Europe ) and constitute the main labor force. These people are well educated, enthusiastic about business entrepreneurship, eager to work as much as they can. They focus on ethics and values. They show a real openness to the world. The Chinese youth is better prepared than the European youth to the coming world. In our opinion, it is the most important asset of China.

2-What are the consequences for the world community? Today, a wave of panic is spreading through the world: Chinese textiles exports to the main western countries jumped by 80 to 90% in the first quarter of 2005. As a result, people campaign for protectionism or a change in currency. In fact, China only represents 5.6% of the world trade in 2003 and the Chinese positive trade balance remains quite constant (On average of 31 $Billion over 7 years ). China only gets a large surplus with the US (175 Billion). In this context, Protectionism or a change in currency could bring more problems than solutions. The best guess is the democratization of China and the increase of its labor costs.

On the other hand, there is an hidden challenge: What should we produce in the future? Presently, China is a blessing for the consumers. However, if current trends were going on, we could export wine, antiques and tourism and import all the machinery and technology from China. Clearly the free trade theory ought to be revisited!

3-Does a risk of conflict exist? In our opinion the answer is no, with a reservation about North Korea. The US-China relations should remain peaceful. The Taiwan-China conflict could find a pacific issue ( Despite the irresponsible French demand to lift the arm embargo on China ). The immediate threat comes from North Korea

What makes people wealthy

What makes people wealthy? How have they attained such mastery of their craft? What makes them exhibit such flawless excellence?
Yes, it's their knowledge and experience, but that is the effect. What is the cause that started them thinking powerfully in the first place?
Simply, it's the way they think. It's their mindset. Today I want to talk about the mindset between the rich and the poor.

You see, the poor work for money. The rich make money work for them. Literally translated, the poor work to gain money in exchange for their services, to pay for bills and all the other expenses. The rich use money to earn money by investing and/or going into business. They employ the services of other people so they do not necessarily have to be physically present to maintain their business. This gives them more free time to engage in other moneymaking ventures. In the case of Internet Marketing, automation replaces labor.
The poor think that the love of money is the root of all evil and that is why they choose to remain poor. The rich think that the lack of money is the root of all evil. They look at the places where crime is rampant, and what they see is a lack of money.
The rich and the poor view the world in diametrically opposite ways!
Say for example, two persons are looking at a yacht, admiring it. The person who chooses to remain poor would say: "I can't afford to buy a yacht." The person who chooses to find ways to create wealth would say: "What can I do to own a yacht?" The thinking process of the poor on how to make money is automatically shut down. The rich think about how they can make money, so that they can afford to buy whatever they desire.
The poor advise their children to study hard so that the children can find a good company to work for when schooling is finished. The rich advise their children to study hard so that their children can build a good company or find a good company to buy.
The excuse of the poor is that they are supporting their families, so expenses are high. The motivation of the rich is that they are supporting their families and need to earn more.
A lot of people cringe when it comes to taking risk about money especially the poor. The rich will find ways to control and manage this risk.
On the issue of reaching retirement age, the poor depend on a company or the government taking care of their needs or pension. The rich prefer financial self-reliance.
The poor can afford to save a few dollars. The rich can afford to make investments to increase their wealth.
The poor compose impressive resumes to find good jobs. The rich come up with dynamic business plans to create jobs for others.
The poor say that money does not interest them. The rich find ways to use money to make life more interesting.
We can see that there are lots of differences in thinking attitudes between the poor and the rich. Often times, the directions of thought are opposite each other. How the mind works determines the person. It is unfortunate though that more people choose the easier way to think, which is why the higher percentage of people are in the poor and middle class. But there is always the chance to improve as long as you are willing.
Let me emphasize though that a willing mind to improve oneself, to elevate oneself from being poor to being wealthy, is not enough and will not materialize if it is not coupled with action, the final and most important determinant to turn a poor person into a rich one. Not just any action but intelligent, decisive, fearless action.

Let's define being rich as having a million dollars of net worth. To become a millionaire, according to Professors Richard McKenzie, of the University of California, Irvine, and Dwight Lee, University of Geogia, is almost a cakewalk. In their Futurist article (August/September, 1998) article "How almost Anyone Can Become a Millionaire," McKenzie and Lee say, "Most people in America got rich because they chose to do so, and they pursued a path to wealth that is wide open to most of the rest of us." In other words, becoming rich is a matter of choice. Let's look at it.

Suppose a 22-year-old college graduate, earning $30,000 a year makes a one-time $2,000 investment in the stock market. With a 10 percent compounded rate (which is the stock market appreciation over the last 50 years), that $2,000 would become $194,000 at age 70. The person wouldn't be rich; but neither would he have sacrificed much. Suppose our 22-year-old was more serious about becoming rich and invested $2,000 each year. At age 70, his wealth would exceed $2.1 million. Thus, the first step towards being a millionaire is to save consistently. In order to save consistently, you must avoid "irresistible" temptations; make do with less expensive cars and clothing and cheaper entertainment.

Another factor in becoming rich is education. Graduate from high school and attend college or some other form of post-high school training. But you have to choose your education wisely. Teachers can expect to earn half as much over their careers as engineers so teachers will find becoming rich tougher than engineers.

Among what McKenzie and Lee call auxiliary rules for becoming rich is: marry someone with an equal or higher education and stay married. Marriage seems to provide a stable institutional setting that promotes greater earnings, which affords greater savings. Married people not only earn more than single people; they also economize on the costs of running their households which allows for greater savings. The operative term is marriage not shacking up. The binding legal contract at the foundation of marriage reflects the couple's personal commitments to each other that gives them added incentives to pool resources. Survey data shows that married couples build up more assets than two single people or couples simply living together.

Becoming a millionaire takes time and requires some risk-taking. If you start out non-rich, don't expect to be rich before you're 50. While you're young, plan to take "reasonable" risks through investment vehicles like index mutual funds (which buy shares of all companies in the Standard and Poor's stock index) or one or more of the 8,000 mutual funds.

McKenzie and Lee point out that the process of becoming rich normally takes decades, sacrifice, dedication and perseverance. Becoming rich is not for everybody. Some people quite rationally may not choose to make the sacrifices of current consumption and enjoyment. Nothing's wrong with that. What the authors stress is that it's one thing to make a conscious choice not to pursue great wealth and another not to know the choice exists.

McKenzie and Lee demonstrate that greater wealth is possible for most Americans. That's a vital demonstration, particularly for black Americans whose political leaders preach they can't make it because of discrimination. The fact that four percent, nearly 11 million Americans are millionaires, most starting out with little or nothing, points to one aspect of America's greatness: By knowing where a person ended up, it's a risky proposition speculating about where he began.

Each teacher will assist the Houston Zoo’s Education Department in the implementation and evaluation of the 2009 Camp Zoofari summer program for children 4-12 years old. Death of America

I don’t think it’ll happen soon, nor will Obama be the direct cause. That someone so clearly inept as Obama could get into our highest seat of power shows how intellectually weak we have become. It was the American dream - the average citizen’s working model of basic economics - that blocked the encroachment of socialism in the past, but now that barrier has been removed by decades of intellectual decline. It was socialism that was the death of Europe, and our fate will be no different. Under Obama, we will be stripped of many of our basic economic freedoms as he brags he will do. Social and political freedoms are sure to follow.

Hitler, Stalin and Mao all came into power as a result of socialistic beliefs. This is no accident. Socialism is an ideology which demands reduction in net freedom under the guise of “equality”. Whenever freedom is reduced in a nation, it becomes more vulnerable to tyranny. Obama isn’t competent enough to be a tyrant, but he may be opening the door for someone who is.

Obama’s economic plan will kill millions of innocent people. America is one of the world’s largest exporters of food. Obama wants to reduce our exports significantly by slashing trade agreements. This means we will sell much less food. With much less food on the global market, food prices around the world will surge upwards. People in poor countries that could barely afford food at the current prices will starve. Between 13 and 18 million people die every year from starvation. That number will more than double by 2012 - assuming only that Obama does what he claims he will do.

The poor around the world will suffer, even if they don’t starve. Raising the corporate tax (it’s already the second highest in the world) even higher will send many more jobs overseas and condemn many dependent on American business to poverty. Commodity prices will double in two years. His massive spending will continue to deflate the value of the dollar, and make our debt even more insurmountable. This is of course, only assuming Obama sticks to his current promised tax and spending increases. In reality, it will probably be much worse.

Things don’t look much better on the foreign policy front. Obama wants to cut military spending by 25% and counter terrorism efforts by half. At the same time, he has suggested military action against Pakistan, an ally armed with nuclear weapons. It is difficult to reconcile these two positions - both of them absurd - with each other.

This was America’s choice for president - someone who will cause the deaths of millions, further impoverish the world’s poor, plunge us into a depression, deplete our resources for combating terrorism while simultaneously attacking our allies and potentially more things which were not included in his campaign promises. Well, at least he’s black. Sort of.

He must persuade many white working class voters it is OK to back a black man.

They will also let you know if you are getting drowsy or straying from your lane. Cars of the future will be radically different than the automobiles of today, and so will the driving experience.

One of the largest contributers to greenhouse gases and pollution worldwide is the humble Internal Combustion Engine used in the transportation of all kinds from tractors to ships and boats, motorbikes to model planes but by far the most populous are the cars and trucks which drive our lives all around the world. By far the biggest users of cars and trucks are first world countries such as Australia which ironically and luckily are the countries who are able to do something about the pollution and damage these vehicles cause.

We all know that all of these vehicles run on fossil fuels which are a finite resources and undoubtedly will run out sometime in the future so naturally alternatives must be sought for this reason alone, but it is because of the carbon monoxide and other noxious gases as well as carbon dioxide that alternatives need to be found sooner rather than later.

Carbon Monoxide is a poisonous gas that causes breathing difficulties, especially for those with breathing conditions such as asthma and generally reduces the health of anyone who is exposed to it. The other noxious gases produces by cars and trucks have their own negative effect of peoples health as well. It goes without saying that we all know what contribution carbon dioxide is contributing to the greenhouse effect currently altering the weather systems around the world. We have all noticed more extreme weather conditions over the past few years and if current greenhouse emissions are not curbed more severe weather is inevitable.

But all is not bleak. There is much being done in the way of alternative feuls and engines transforming our humble car into a vision from the future. Air, electrically and solar powered cars are being constantly improved and developed to one day match the performance of our current fossil fuelled cars. Also renewable, recyclable fuels are also being tried out on modifying engines which can use resources which would otherwise be wasted.

With this in mind Futureworld have display days where some of these vehicles can be inspected and put through their paces. The centre already has a display day of a hybrid car which has both an electric and a conventional engine. When the batteries for the electric engine run low the petrol motor kicks in moving the car and at the same time recharging the batteries of the electric motor. All of this means a far more efficient car that uses far less petrol and produces far less of the gaseous byproducts that pollute our air. All the extra information on the car is available for anyone who is interested. It is a fascinating and exciting exhibit which will draw the attention of anyone who comes to Futureworld.

Also here is a solar powered cars used in the solar challenge race held annually here in australia. The race is held drawing entries from all over the world showcasing the most up to date and state of the art advances in solar cell and vehicle design. The solar vehicle on display here also has a history in the movie industry. It was the winning car used in the movie detailing Australia's very own Solar Challenge race from Adelaide to Darwin so have a touch and feel those hollywood vibes!!!

World of Transportation

I remember checking out this book at my elementary school library and being fascinated with the prospect of futuristic transportation. In the second grade I even did a science project on "Cars in the Year 2000." (In 1992, the year 2000 still had some significance to a second grader.) My cars traveled on an electric grid throughout cities. Nowadays, my hope for the technology of the future mostly resides in ideas like wireless power and the prospect of setting up wireless power grids, much like the wireless internet infrastructure some cities are adopting.

Chapter 1 of The Future World of Transportation opens with the ambitious "Report from the Year 2050." Their future is filled with "Ultra Jets" (described in the glossary as a double-decker plane of the future which loads passengers and cargo while hovering in the air) and "autoplanes" (a combination airplane and car) but, "there is still only one terminal for space flight, the Earth International Space Port near Tucson, Arizona [which is] used largely by people who have business on the satellite space stations, or 'space-habs' or by those going to one of the new space station resorts."

The second chapter is basically an advertisement for the now defunct World of Motion ride at EPCOT Center in Walt Disney World while the third chapter explores the history of transportation from the invention of the wheel to "current" flight technology. The fourth chapter is called "Moving Ahead on Land" and starts getting into some great paleo-futuristic territory with the "Planetran, a sleek magnetic levitation train propelled by electromagnets, [that could] whisk passengers from New York to Los Angeles through underground tunnels in less than an hour." Now that's what I'm talking about.

The fifth chapter explores "The Future at Sea" and basically guarantees the young readers that they will see three-wheeled land/sea vehicles powered by water jets in their lifetimes. The idea of their "floating hotel" is the most intriguing, as it appears that the hotel itself could, "move between ports on a cushion of air at 50 miles per hour." There appears to be no explanation necessary as to why someone would want a moving hotel in the paleo-future.

Chapter six lays out the somewhat mundane history of speed on land, sea and in the air but gets into amazing paleo-futuristic territory with the demonstration of a WASP or Williams Aerial Systems Platform which, according to the glossary is "a one-person flying device that is powered by a small turbofan engine." Personal rocket packs, here we come.

The book ends with a chapter called "Giant Steps into Space" which, as we all know, is the final frontier. Again, I can't help but wonder if any publisher could put out such an earnest and optimistic book for children today. The sincerity with which this book addresses the beautiful technology to come is astounding. Part of me laughs off everything in this book as fanciful and naive dreaming. Another part of me longs for that cynicism to be overtaken by hope for the future and the desire to again be amazed. Because, if the iPhone is the only thing that will revolutionize the way we live (as I believe on some level it will) we seem to be far from the "future" EPCOT sold us in 1982.
